Laura Ann Ewing, 6, is run over by a dump truck and killed on Columbia Point.
April 25, 1962
The accident occurs on Mount Vernon Street, the only road through the public housing development to the city dump at the end of the peninsula. The accident sparks a series of demonstrations, including the blocking of the street and protests outside City Hall and the State House that leads to the formation of a Columbia Point residents association led by Dorothy Haskins and Maud Hurd, the closure of the dump, opening of a community center, and construction of a local middle school.
